Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)
Manuel Bros. has a long history of being active in the small to medium sized HDD industry. Most of the smaller bores we do are performed for conduit installation under the Telecommunications Division, however our American Augers DD6 and DD90 are used for longer more involved bores for the power, gas, water and wastewater industries as well as the telecommunications industry. For over 15 years, Manuel Bros. Inc. has performed shots as long as 2200 feet to protect sensitive biological and archeological resources, through solid granite, under rivers and highways, up steep embankments – Manuel Bros' drillers are always ready to take on any challenge that our drills can handle. Our clients include PG&E, SDG&E, Roseville Electric, Caltrans, Nevada County CA, Nevada Irrigation District, AT&T, MCI/Verizon.

Rule 20 / Undergrounding/Gas Distribution
Buried dry utilities are a main focus of the Specialty Division. Complex, multi-owner undergrounding projects are always a challenge and Manuel Bros. Specialty Division has an outstanding reputation for delivering a quality product, on time and on-budget. Manuel Bros. Inc. understands the Owners' needs in minimizing disruption to local communities during construction and we work hard to address business and property owners’ needs before, during and after construction. Whether it's a primary ductbank through tight urban neighborhoods, complicated undergrounding of overhead utilities through commercial districts or gas distribution in suburban residential areas we have the necessary expertise to get your project completed. Electrical Substation Site Work
Recently the Specialty Division has been working with some of its Quanta sister companies as an EPC partner in upgrading existing electrical substations or constructing new substations. Our scope typically involves the civil oriented site-work; earthwork, grading and drainage, underground conduit, concrete foundations, grounding, fencing and landscaping. Manuel Bros. Inc. is excited about this market and see it becoming a mainstay for the Specialty Division in the next few years. Clients include; PG&E, SDG&E, PacificCorp and Iberdrola.

Miscellaneous
The Specialty Division is always interested in new fields and challenges. Manuel Bros. Inc. installed three 100 ft x 20" steel casing under the eastern portal of the Yerbe Buena Island tunnel of the I-80 Bay bridge using a Worth-Soltau microtunneling machine to bore through the rock on line and on grade. Manuel Bros. Inc. installed a temporary 8" hdpe sewer by-pass over a 165 ft failed slope in three days in order to stop a sewage spill into a sensitive streambed, and then later bored up through the slope on a compound radius to replace the permanent line. Manuel Bros. Inc. has done earthwork to stabilize failed slopes, bridge hangs for suspended utilities, waterline installations in the Sierras, and rock trenching for all manner of utilities. HANS SHILLINGER P.E.-Division Manager, Specialty

Hans Shillinger is a registered civil engineer with over 25 years experience in civil construction and design projects. Hans began his construction career as a runner with Underground Construction in 1983 on the San Francisco Cable Car Rehabilitation Project and joined their professional staff after graduating from the Agricultural Engineering Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He worked as a design engineer for two small civil engineering firms before returning to the contractor side of the industry. He has experience in telecommunications, wastewater, pipeline, land development, horizontal directional drilling and environmental projects. Since joining Manuel Bros. in 2000, Hans has managed numerous projects and acted as their lead estimator on civil oriented work.
